UMR is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable communities in Kenya by addressing critical issues such as food insecurity, economic instability, and health challenges. In partnership with the Wajir County Health Office and UNICEF Kenya, UMR operates semi-mobile sites that provide essential food supplies to 5,000 people facing food insecurity. These sites significantly improve the well-being of these communities and help them build resilience, laying the foundation for healthier lives and more sustainable futures.

Smart Hydroponics Project Phase 1

UMR is tackling the challenges posed by climate change through the Smart Hydroponics Project, a collaboration with Caritas Nairobi. This initiative aims to address food insecurity by introducing innovative, water-efficient farming techniques. Phase 1 of the project was launched in Limuru and Mukuru informal settlements, training 111 women and youth in hydroponic farming, which uses soil-free methods to grow crops. Participants also received entrepreneurial training, empowering them to pursue agribusiness opportunities and build financial independence. With the establishment of 33 greenhouses, participants gained hands-on experience while saving a portion of their sales through Caritas Microfinance Bank, enabling them to access credit for future ventures.

Smart Hydroponics Project Phase 2

Building on the success of Phase 1, Phase 2 expands to Limuru and Wajir County. In Limuru, two demonstration greenhouses and five vertical hydroponic wall gardens will serve as educational hubs for 50 new participants, promoting climate-smart agriculture and sustainable farming practices. In Wajir County, where drought and water scarcity have devastated traditional livelihoods, the project introduces four smart hydroponic greenhouses, training 30 beneficiaries in techniques to overcome these environmental challenges. By focusing on efficient water use and year-round crop production, the project aims to create a sustainable food system that strengthens resilience in this arid region.

Health and Food security

UMR also addresses pressing health needs in Kenya, particularly through its cataract surgeries and hearing aid programs. Cataracts can severely impact a person's independence and quality of life, but UMR’s skilled ophthalmologists perform life-changing surgeries, restoring vision and empowering individuals to regain independence, pursue education, and engage more fully in their communities. Similarly, UMR’s hearing aid program provides vital support to individuals with hearing impairments. Through comprehensive audiology assessments and the provision of tailored hearing aids, UMR fosters inclusion and enhances social participation, improving overall well-being and opening up greater opportunities for education and communication.

Family & Orphan Sponsorship

UMR’s Family & Orphan Sponsorship Program supports children and families facing economic instability. This program provides immediate aid while fostering long-term community-wide change through child protection efforts, vocational training, and economic empowerment initiatives. By helping individuals gain financial independence and strengthen local economies, UMR promotes stability and self-reliance, ensuring that children and their families can thrive within more cohesive communities.
